Sustainability is deeply embedded in how we operate at Stalatube. This article highlights our key achievements, from setting climate targets through SBTi and using over 90% recycled raw materials, to improving energy efficiency and workplace safety. We also showcase our strong EcoVadis rating and steps toward future CSRD reporting. Together, these milestones reflect our ongoing journey toward a more sustainable future.
SBTi
We are committed to setting emission reduction targets in line with climate science and the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) under the Paris Agreement. These targets will help guide our actions and decisions towards a more sustainable future.
Work on setting targets started at the beginning of the year. Clear targets will help us ensure that the necessary climate action is taken to secure the sustainability and continuity of our business.
Recycled raw-material
We guarantee that at least 75% of the raw material we use in our manufacturing is recycled. In practice, the average rate exceeded 90 % in 2024. A higher recycled content of the raw material means a lower emissions, which allows us to reduce the emissions intensity.
Energy efficiency
Improving energy efficiency plays an important role in minimising the environmental impact of our operations. Energy efficiency improvements are measured by energy intensity, which is the amount of electricity used per produced tonne. As energy intensity decreases, energy efficiency improves accordingly. Between 2021 and 2024, the improvement was more than 7%.
Zero Accidents
At Stalatube, we have been working for a long time to develop and strengthen our safety culture, and to develop preventive actions. This work has had positive results and we have reached a significant milestone: two whole calendar years without an accident at work resulting in sickness absence. Also, prioritizing safety in the workplace is paramount, ensuring that all employees can work in a secure environment.
Employee retention
High employee retention rate in the manufacturing industry reflects employee commitment, job satisfaction and a well-functioning working environment. Long-term employees provide valuable knowledge and continuity, which contributes to the competitiveness and development of the company. Our continuous annual target is to keep retention rate high and in 2024 we achieved 97 %.
Training hours
All employees have access to the necessary skills, knowledge, and resources to perform their roles effectively, align with the organization’s strategy and targets, and promote personal and professional development. The number of training hours indicates the continuous development and improvement of our employees’ skills.
CSRD / DMA
Although sustainability reporting in line with the requirements of the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) is not yet relevant for us, we are preparing for it and will prepare a sustainability report in 2026. Preparing for reporting is strongly linked to a double materiality assessment from both an impact and economic perspective. We conducted this assessment in 2024 and identified the key issues and impacts. We also conducted a comprehensive stakeholder analysis.
EcoVadis
We assessed our business’s sustainability practices through EcoVadis, a sustainability assessment company. The assessment covers 21 sustainability criteria across four themes: environment, labour and human rights, ethics, and sustainable procurement.
In this initial assessment, we received a silver medal and a score of 70/100, placing Stalatube in the top 10% of over 150,000 companies worldwide. Our absolute strengths in the assessment were environmental performance leadership, excellence in human and labour rights and also adherence to strong ethical standards.
History
Our family-owned company has grown over fifty years from a small Finnish player to an international leader in the manufacture of stainless steel structures, with a focus on sustainability and quality. The company is headquartered in Lahti, but has operations in six countries and exports to all continents. Although global in scope, being local is a key part of the company’s identity and way of working.
