Back in 2017, we wrote about the first phase of the Johan Sverdrup development. While its nearing the finish line with plans to start production later this year, construction for the second phase has now begun.

Duplex is a superb material for this type of purpose. Its corrosion resistance helps combat the challenges of the highly corrosive marine environment. Being maintenance-free also makes it an attractive material for a field located in harsh conditions some 150 kilometers off the coast, says Export Manager Markus Pirkkalainen

It’s almost impossible to talk about stainless steel without mentioning its ecological value. The material is 100 % recyclable and increases sustainability anywhere it is used. This is potentiated by duplex’s high strength – that enables weight-savings – and not having to coat or paint the surfaces. Not a small asset for the oil and gas industry, considering a field built today will be operating for decades to come.

In projects of this scale and duration, cooperation between companies in the supply chain is critical to success. Project management tools enhance the operations of the entire chain, providing timely data every step of the way. Stalatube’s latest development, a web-based project platform, has already proven to be a useful asset. This platform functions as a home page of the project and invites all members to open information sharing.

A large project like this requires efficient interpersonal communication and project management tools.

We’ve paid attention to sharpening our project management skills over the past few years. A large project like this requires efficient interpersonal communication and project management tools. In the Johan Sverdrup project, we’ve been delighted by the collaboration within the entire supply chain – all the way from the raw material supplier to the end-user.

The Johan Sverdrup development is one of the largest oil fields in the North Sea. Phase 2 will increase the production capacity of the entire field by about 200,000 barrels per day, totaling circa 660,000 barrels per day.
