Topi Karppinen – committed to learning and development

Topi Karppinen is an industrial professional from Lahti whose career has been shaped by hands-on work, growing responsibility, and continuous learning. For him, work has never been just about completing tasks, it has always been an opportunity to develop, both as an individual and as part of a team.

Topi grew up in Lahti and originally trained as a car mechanic at a vocational school. However, his path soon led into industrial work. He spent five years at the Koskinen Oy plywood factory, and after completing his military service, he continued his career at Kemppi as a production planner. Although his career path was not carefully mapped out from the beginning, one thing has remained constant throughout: an interest in learning.

Studying has always been close to my heart throughout my life, even if it was just reading, Topi says.

A fast and unexpected move to Stalatube

A major turning point came during the co-operation negotiations at Kemppi, which led to layoffs and terminations. The situation changed quickly, and just two days later Topi started at Stalatube as a welding operator.

His start at Stalatube was typical for many production employees. He first learned to operate one machine, went through a steady onboarding process, and built his skills through hands-on work. Over the years, his responsibilities have grown significantly. Today, Topi operates several machines and works across multiple laser lines.

At the beginning, there could be an entire week with very little to do. Now there’s always plenty going on, he says with a smile.

Taking on responsibility and making an impact

In 2018, Topi was chosen as a shop steward when the previous representative stepped down. The role brought new responsibilities, including representing employees, participating in negotiations, and gaining a deeper understanding of how the workplace functions.

Today, Topi serves as the chief shop steward, a role that requires patience and long-term commitment.

I’ve always been someone who takes on challenges. The mindset has been: why not? Topi sums up.

Studying to support working life

In autumn 2024, Topi began his studies at HUMAK University of Applied Sciences, following the Workplace Development track within the Community Education programme. The idea came from an advertisement he happened to see and quickly turned into something concrete.

In his thesis, Topi focuses on workplace training and onboarding in an industrial environment, with the aim of creating something practical that can also benefit his employer.

When work flows, you enjoy it

When asked what he is especially proud of in his work, Topi’s answer is simple.

The best part is when you truly know the job. When everything runs smoothly and you can keep the process moving with zero scrap.

For Topi, Stalatube is a stable employer without a “revolving door” culture. Long careers, committed people, and opportunities for development are all things he genuinely values.
