Tuomas Höylä’s career path in technology was not carefully planned from the start, but his interest in IT and continuous learning has been a constant throughout his journey.
Originally from Jyväskylä, Tuomas first earned a degree in Information Technology Engineering and later completed a Master’s degree in Mobile Technology. He began his career in telecommunications and network-related roles, gradually shifting his focus toward software development.
I really wanted to learn it, so I started systematically shifting my focus in that direction. That led to a completely new career, which I had to start from scratch, as a trainee.
Tuomas spent around ten years working in software development. His projects ranged from customer systems to accounting and investment platforms. Some were small and concrete, while others were large-scale systems developed by hundreds of professionals.
In smaller systems, you quickly see what you’re building. With larger ones, you have to accept that development is slower, but at the same time extremely precise.
A new direction at Stalatube
Tuomas joined Stalatube in 2024 through an open job application.
I came across a job posting for an IT Specialist role and thought it could be a good fit.
The company was not very familiar to him at first, but his interest grew during the recruitment process. What stood out was the opportunity to be part of a genuine, Finnish export-driven industrial company.
A flat organization and being in the middle of it gives you visibility and the opportunity to communicate in every direction.
Tuomas started as an IT Specialist but quickly transitioned into the role of ICT Manager, essentially already during his probation period.
A versatile role
In his current role, Tuomas particularly values the variety of his work. Being an ICT Manager does not mean purely administrative responsibilities, hands-on work is still a significant part of his daily routine.
I still get to get my hands dirty. Sometimes I’m installing printers, sometimes working on integrations, and sometimes thinking about cybersecurity policies.
No two days are the same. One moment may involve solving a technical issue, the next planning system integrations, and the next discussing matters with the management team.
Technical problems are too interesting for me to move purely into administrative work.
Learning every day
Tuomas describes his first year at Stalatube primarily as a period of learning. There was a lot to absorb in a new environment, and understanding the bigger picture took time.
The first year was largely about understanding the current state, how things are done and why they work the way they do.
One of the most rewarding aspects of his work has been analyzing systems and processes in depth.
The best moments are when you start tracing an issue step by step and eventually understand where everything really begins.
One particularly memorable experience has been working on ERP-related integrations.
That project forced me to understand how the architecture is built.
The right level of challenge
The ICT field is constantly evolving, and it is impossible to know everything. According to Tuomas, this is simply part of the job.
There’s a constant feeling that you don’t know everything. And that’s normal.
However, he does not see this as a negative, quite the opposite. Continuous learning is what keeps the work engaging.
Take it seriously, but not too seriously.
He also values the team around him.
We have a great team, and that makes everything easier. There hasn’t been any unnecessary drama.
Why Stalatube?
According to Tuomas, Stalatube is a great workplace especially because of the variety and continuous development opportunities.
In this role, you get to look at things from many different angles. And the tasks that come from management have genuinely been interesting.
The combination has worked well for him.
It’s been like hitting the jackpot.
Rapid technological development does not intimidate Tuomas, instead, it sparks curiosity.
Many people say all this is scary. I think it’s incredibly interesting.
And that idea sums up his work at Stalatube well: the world keeps changing, and his curiosity keeps up with it.
